Etching

Metal engraving is an artistic printing technique that involves incising a design or image into a metal surface, usually copper, zinc, aluminum or brass. The process begins with the preparation of the metal plate, which is polished and coated with an acid-resistant substance called varnish or wax. Then, the artist uses special tools, such as metal tips or acid, to draw or engrave the design on the surface of the plate, removing the varnish and exposing the area that will receive the paint.

After engraving, the plate is immersed in an acid bath, which will corrode the areas not protected by the varnish, creating grooves or reliefs that will contain the ink during the printing process. After cleaning the plate, the paint is applied to its surface and carefully removed, leaving only the paint in the grooves or reliefs.

Printing is done by pressing the plate against the paper, usually using a press. The end result is a printed image with precise details and a unique texture, characteristic of metal engraving. This technique is prized for its ability to produce multiple copies of a work of art while maintaining the quality and integrity of the original design.
